We promote restoration of Pacific Northwest grasslands.
We are training the next generation of land managers.
Today we face the increasing threats of desertification, biodiversity loss and climate change complicated by the need to feed billions of people. We depend upon agriculture to do this but currently we produce more eroding soil than food! Grasslands, nearly half the earth’s land surface, are vital ecosystems both to produce food and protect biodiversity. We believe that by using properly managed livestock in these areas, can be part of not just a sustainable food system, but a regenerative one. The process we use to make management decisions regarding our land, animals and business is Holistic Management.
Healing the planet is not just about land and livestock. It’s also about building capacity and empowering people to make sound decisions that benefit the triple bottom line – humans, economics, and the environment – now and for future generations. We believe that diversity is key to resiliency in any system, including our human systems. We are dedicated to creating conditions for new managers to bring their capacity and skills onto the land.
I attended New Cowgirl camp as the first female in my family with an interest in stewarding our ancestral lands. I had zero experience in livestock handling or land management but knew that I wanted to step into my role with integrity and in a way that felt more connected to natural rhythms than I had seen in many traditional male-led ranching and land stewardship operations. The instructors at New Cowgirl Camp create a safe space for folks of all types to come together as they are to learn these skills and ask as many questions as they need to. The learning environment is a mix of hands-on, lecture, and ample time for hanging out to casually connect with other attendees and instructors. I made lifelong connections during my time at Lazy R.
